Facade openings are the structural elements of buildings that come into physical contact with the occupants or workers on a daily basis. However, most builders are only interested in the item prices of these openings. They want to see a table sent via email that they can compare with other incoming offers, there’s a number in the bottom right corner, and that’s it. The majority considers this cost element relevant and the largest item.

While this might be relatively acceptable for a plastic window quote (though it’s still not correct there), the aluminium door and window market is a broader spectrum with more complex issues. Here, larger and more costly things are expected of the client, especially in the peripheral areas we call “no man’s land,” and it’s precisely this lack of experience that unscrupulous window companies, aluminium “give-and-take” firms, resellers, and small manufacturers exploit.

By calculating the window, the application of the products in the building is not yet solved; for installations outside the plane of the facade, the curvature of the facade is not surveyed with a geodetic or laser scan (due to the alignment of the windows on a line or plane), the tasks of thermal insulation and moisture sealing are not addressed, there’s no scaffolding, no control over shading solutions, no protection against breakage, no installation of opening sensors, no insulated support below the floor plane, no installation price, no on-site organization calculated (crane work, lifting, on-site glass manipulation), no calculation of delivery and crate lifting, and waste removal is missing. In short, this is not the price that will have to be paid in the end.

If requested by the client, our company conducts a personally held needs assessment meeting and professional consultations before submitting a proposal. It’s best if the architect is present at these meetings because the design concept and the selected facade elements (doors, glass panels, shading devices, turning material connections) need to be in sync.
