After the successes of the past two years, three KAV buildings were awarded with the ALUTA award of excellence, the only quality recognition of Hungarian aluminium window, door, facade manufacturers, in the “small project”, i.e. residential building, category.

“KAV applied with three buildings, and the jury, headed by József Finta, judged that all three buildings were worthy of the ALUTA Award of Excellence due to their high quality and structural solutions. The design of the buildings is similar in many respects, and the performance of the KAV is outstanding in all of them. What is different is that one of them is built on a hilly area, the other on a flat surface, and the third in the countryside; the latter differs from the other two because of its angled ground plan walls and the large amount of shading structures. So there are three reliable, high-quality properties with large glass surfaces and intricate structural elements, none of which were in any way a lesser technical achievement than the others, so all three deserved the award in the “small project” category”, said Sándor Fegyverneky, President of ALUTA.

The unique feature of one of the award-winning projects is that the frontal sliding wall, made of a door and window system, is the first in Hungary that resolved a 13.5 metre long homogeneous yet divided glass surface, instead of using a system solution. For the second ALUTA Award of Excellence property, the development of an uncompromising living space was the primary consideration, which also prevailed in the doors and windows. With the use of the highest quality products and the most prudent building connection solutions, the layout of windows, the ratio of their exposed surfaces, their connection with the supporting structure and the windows on the same façade is consistent. The third property has undergone a complete renovation, with the floor plan, overall façade and supporting structure changed, and a new roof level has been added. The bearers were replaced by large doors and windows. The curiosity of the project is the unique solution of the frameless sliding doors in the U-shaped living room glass wall, and the application of insulating glass panels with minimal reflection, unique in Hungary.

At the ALUTA General Meeting, Károly Lovász received the award from Sándor Fegyverneky, President of the Professional Association. The Chairperson of the jury was Dr. József Finta, Kossuth Prize holding architect, and the jury members were György Stocker, associate professor, and Sándor Fegyverneky, former national chief architect.

About ALUTA

It is a professional and interest representation group established to implement the common interests of the member companies of the Aluminium Window and Facade Association. Only companies that consider the quality of production and products as an inevitable basic requirement in the implementation of their market strategy will thus become a holder of the ALUTA trademark. By using its technical and intellectual knowledge base, the association provides community services to its members, and represents them in the European association called FAECF (Federation of European Window and Curtain Walling Manufacturers Associations) and with the Hungarian Standards Institution. In accordance with its purpose and with the assistance from EU organisations, it provides further training, quality improvement and quality assurance services to its members. In its programme it considers the mid-term market development of its members as its main task and, to achieve it, it uses the help of the most excellent experts, media exposure and, last but not least, cooperation with decision-makers.

The architectural design of glass structures demands special expertise
Although one of the most modern façade elements is glass, numerous problems can arise during the design process if the glass structures used have not been properly thought through. As to what makes these glass structures special, and why it is important for competent sector designers to deal with these building elements even during planning, we spoke with chartered architect György Mihály Stocker, reader in the BUTE Faculty of Civil Engineering, and vice-president of ALUTA.

KAV’s customers come into contact with several of our colleagues in the bidding, preparation and construction processes in the course of a job. These are our sales and estimation colleagues, our technical and manufacturing preparation engineers, our project engineers, and then our installation specialists. It is very rare that the end-user comes into contact with the manufacturing preparation engineers. In this article, we’d like to describe the work of these professionals in connection with the Continental Golf Club construction project.

The market for shading in Hungary
Although, in the past, residential properties tended to be built in Hungary without shading, today it is a priority in the design process. Due to climate change, it is just as important for property to provide an optimal thermal performance in the summer period as it is during winter. For this reason, KAV began designing customised shading. Of course, when introducing an innovation, we need to take into account the nature of the Hungarian market. KAV’s Managing Director, Károly Lovász, talks about the most exciting developments.
