The popularity of the minimalist style in architecture is one of the reasons that aluminium doors and windows entered the family house sector. Applying the principle of “less is more” to architecture led architects and designers to use unique solutions and austere or transparent surfaces. In a minimalist home, simple shapes and forms help create an atmosphere of harmony, where space itself serves humanity.

Minimalist art is rooted in the United States of the ‘60s and ‘70s. The concept is based on the thesis of Mies van der Rohe, “less is more”. During the design process, an architect defines all surfaces and facades as unbroken planes, possibly only switching between undivided planes, and using as few kinds of materials as possible. In this approach, surfaces are stretched between two defined planes, i.e. the ceiling and the floor. These may be made of clear and noble materials, such as bricks, stone, or facade panels, or transparent structures, such as doors and windows made of aluminium and glass. Such transparent surfaces are more than mere functional structures (open, tilt-and-open); they constitute independent and dominant units, such as fixed or sliding walls that define living spaces. In that role, custom doors and windows follow the principles of purity. There is no room for window-straps, so straps and iron parts remain hidden; knobs are replaced by sliding door handles that are also commonly hidden. As plenty of natural light is essential for the minimalist style, designers often use frameless sliding doors and minimalist windows to achieve greater transparency. Automated operation, motor-driven locks, bluetooth control and fingerprint scanners may improve the clear aesthetics of doors and windows.

As minimalism gains ground in Hungarian design, demand for floor-to-ceiling, undivided, transparent front structures and timeless materials is on the rise again. Through the increased use of triple-pane thermal glass and re-defined weight limits, the minimalist style is now driving the spread and popularity of aluminium windows and doors, and of unique windows and doors in general.

The architectural design of glass structures demands special expertise
Although one of the most modern façade elements is glass, numerous problems can arise during the design process if the glass structures used have not been properly thought through. As to what makes these glass structures special, and why it is important for competent sector designers to deal with these building elements even during planning, we spoke with chartered architect György Mihály Stocker, reader in the BUTE Faculty of Civil Engineering, and vice-president of ALUTA.

The market for shading in Hungary
Although, in the past, residential properties tended to be built in Hungary without shading, today it is a priority in the design process. Due to climate change, it is just as important for property to provide an optimal thermal performance in the summer period as it is during winter. For this reason, KAV began designing customised shading. Of course, when introducing an innovation, we need to take into account the nature of the Hungarian market. KAV’s Managing Director, Károly Lovász, talks about the most exciting developments.

A communal gastronomic space where the fusion of outdoor and indoor is facilitated by KAV glass portals
BABA Budapest is not merely a restaurant; it is a space where one can feel at home throughout the day. The main principles of design focused on the seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces and the creation of a genuine sense of community experience. We had the opportunity to discuss the BABA with its lead designer, Dóra Fónagy, while sitting at one of its tables, and during our conversation, we ourselves experienced why it provides a truly unique experience.

Development by KAV of customised shades
The hot and dry summers experienced over the last few years due to climate change have made suitable shading solutions ever more important. However, the standard systems available on the market do not meet individual customer needs either in terms of movement mechanisms or their form. That is why KAV’s engineers are offering customised aluminium shades that reflect contemporary trends in building. Károly Lovász, Managing Director of KAV, provides an insight into these special solutions.

Production of custom doors and windows at the KAV plant
Most domestic companies selling aluminium doors and windows do not have their own production capacity. However, in KAV's imposing manufacturing plant, they are able to resolve even seemingly impossible profile connections. This is where further thought-out versions of Schüco or Reynaers profile elements and completely unique door and window solutions are manufactured, designed and developed by KAV engineers. We talked to Albert Herbut, the head of KAV's Kisbér plant, about the production processes and the operation of the plant.

The key to the realisation of large-scale glass structures is thinking together
Huge glass structures are definitive elements of modern buildings. It is therefore especially important that architects create the plans while thinking together with sector designers. On the questions arising while designing and constructing glass façades, we spoke with chartered architect György Mihály Stocker, reader in the BUTE and vice-president of ALUTA, who played an outstanding role as specialist consultant in the construction of the Hungarian House of Music in its present form.

Aluminium doors and windows with custom solutions
The founding of KAV Hungária was also triggered by an innovative idea: why not introduce aluminium doors and windows to the family home market? Since then, our own developments, individual solutions, needs assessment and construction work organisation have become the defining elements of the company. Károly Lovász, the managing director of KAV, Gábor Csóti, the founder of the Gamechangers community and Kálmán Szabó, the host of the podcast by the Association for Excellence Public Benefit Association, spoke about innovation, the underlying managerial thinking and organisational structure.

Why is it worth choosing an aluminium front door?
When building or renovating a house, developers and architects may be wondering when it is worth deciding on an aluminium front door. In addition to durability, the main argument may be that aluminium can deliver dimensions and solutions that neither wood nor plastics allow.

Windows in the service of maximising the view
Frameless windows are favourite elements in houses built in modern and minimalistic styles, since, thanks to the nearly invisible frames, the external and internal spaces almost connect; in this way, nothing disturbs the view, and also natural light may flow into residential spaces through a greater surface.

Poet’s Garden: To build something that, at first glance, they say is impossible!
Organically representing art in architecture and transforming the existence within residential buildings into a real experience. In this spirit, the Poet's Garden project in Buda, which operates with numerous unique solutions not only in its visual appearance but also in its details, was created, and KAV was responsible for the window and door solutions. We had a conversation with Nikos Ziszidis, CEO of ETNA Kft., who executed the final construction of this globally unique architectural complex.

Frameless sliding door structures with an architect’s eye
Each project poses a different challenge to architects and to door and window professionals as well. One of our reference concepts is based on the unlimited view created by the wing-opening roof and the space stretched by the floor. Filigree division solutions, as well as frameless sliding mechanisms, were the main solution to achieve maximum transparency. We talked to the architect Orsolya Glavanovics about the issues raised by the aluminium door and window solutions implemented during the design and construction, who the Myd-II Interior Design Stúdióval planned it jointly, house operating on this for the special fenestration solutions.

Wind pressure is the biggest challenge for doors and windows designed for Iceland
Our company, is involved in the doors and windows solutions of the Marriott Hotel, being built near Harpa, one of the symbolic buildings of Reykavík. The Icelandic architecture and the weather conditions on the island require different systems from the ones we are used to at home, so the KAV team has also built a prototype for this work, taking into account, among others, the installation and insulation aspects. Details were given by Norbert Kiss, architect consultant and Csaba Mravik, chief development engineer.
